Arena Football comes to the Annex in 2015. While googling the team, it appears they were once in Greenville, SC.

It would be clever for the city build a quality indoor sports venue to host these semi-pro teams. A small venue that has the amenities of an NBA arena..a couple restaurants, pubs, suites.

Great - this is something more than the string of hockey teams, I hope. Too bad, it's not the Winston-Salem Silverhawks, but I reckon (in Greenville) the name was Carolina and it remains appropriate (I reckon). I checked the Gridiron Developmental website but there seems to be no clear list of teams only a list by name, by division, but doesn't really indicate where they are located.

I've long dreamed of seeing a 4,500 seat $40 million arena downtown that can host teams such as this one. In downtown, a team like this would do very well. In the LJVM annex, in the middle of a parking lot, beside a massive empty fairground, surrounded largely by emptiness, they may not do as well and won't have as strong of an economic impact. A downtown arena could be a second anchor in an arena district in West End Village, along with BB&T Ballpark. That arena could position the city to host minor league hockey, basketball, and arena football. It can also host concerts, graduations, conventions, and maybe WSSU or Salem College could use the facility for basketball. A streetcar line would connect the arena to both Salem College and WSSU. I would like to see area colleges and employers that use shuttles buy group streetcar passes and give them to employees/students. That would allow WSSU/Salem College students (I think they both have live on campus requirements for some students?), Wake Forest employees and students, and Wells Fargo employees to ride the streetcar for free, as an example. Students could ride the streetcar to the game.

This facility in Prescott Valley, AZ., cost just $25 million to build, just a few years ago. It seats around 5,100-6,200. According to the link below, it has 22 private luxury suites, and two party suites.

I could imagine the 4,500 seat Flow Motors Arena at Peters Creek Parkway and Brookstown Avenue. It may cost less to build than I originally thought? It could cost about the same amount as some of the apartment buildings under construction downtown?

An extraordinarily sound analysis F&M and a fantastic idea, but that loud wooooooshing noise you just heard was such sound analysis passing over the heads of Forsyth Countyians without a thimble-full of consideration!

Just saw the announcement about the Silverhawks. The name doesn’t have any local ties, but I still like it. Reminds me of a cartoon I used to watch as a kid.

F&M, I’m 100% on board with the downtown arena idea. It makes a heck of a lot of sense. Unfortunately, I put it up there with a Downtown IMAX theatre – great ideas that will probably never happen.
