GE Aviation has been working with NASA to build a "quiet" engine for supersonic flight and this is exactly what Boom needs: "PALMDALE — NASA’s latest experimental airplane moved one step closer to flight, earlier this month, as the jet engine that will power it to supersonic speeds was installed. "The General Electric Aviation engine was installed in the X-59, the unique aircraft designed to fly quietly at supersonic speeds, at Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works facility in Palmdale, where the aircraft has been under development." Impressive from the perspective of ambitiously working hard and having a positive impact in business in his hometown. Where I find Mr Carroll to be particularly unimpressive is in his deliberate redlining of Winston-Salem from any appreciable investment from most of his various businesses. In fact, his only investment here comes off as a Eff U to the city “West of Colfax”. With substantial investments in both multi family housing & hospitality, the esteemed Mr Carroll deemed a prominent piece of property adjacent to the entrance of Truist Stadium to not be a good site for one of his apartments or hotels, but to be the perfect place to build a self storage unit!?!

I see that he didn’t see the need to put one of his self storage buildings on the properties he purchased around the Grasshoppers ballpark. Instead he filled it with apartments & a hotel with more of both to come. I also don’t forecast him doing that in his downtown Wilmington project as well. It leaves me with the impression that he was being deliberate in engaging in actions to sabotage previously envisioned plans for the ballpark district in Winston. In other words, I don’t particularly like the dude.

One wonders why the W-S Planning Office did not see through this and disallow an obviously adverse business in what the city wants to be a showcase.

This has been covered before. That property had been zoned for highway business for decades which allows self storage units as an approved use. So one more time, the city absolutely, positively, and definitively had no power whatsoever in intervening with Mr Carroll’s plan to take a big commercial dump on that property. Sorry, the Planning Dept, Allen Joines & Council cannot be blamed for this, regardless of how some in the community so fervently wish they could.

It appears as if Greensboro's ballpark owner took my idea of partnering with Front Street Capital to develop the sites around their ballpark with a mixed-use development. I've said, for years, The Dash should do this (partner with Front Street Capital) with the site behind the outfield wall. Only a local developer who cares about their community will build a good pedestrian-friendly mixed-use development. Front Street Capital is perfect for this and they can make a big project happen.

Thanks for the reminder. I do wish this area could have developed as originally proposed!
