Hhmmm, sounds like we need McCrory back in the Governor seat.... he’s the one that got the beltway on the fast track to begin with, with funding!

Uh no, we are still losing Business because of that Bama bigot’s actions.

Two other bits:

The "new road" connecting the north end of PCP to Broad has moved to 'unfunded'. This is great news as we really have to hope that that area of the city becomes more tightly integrated into the neighborhoods and we can avoid a suburban-style interchange.

While the widening of I-40 east all the way to the b-40 split is now delayed to 2029, the whole thing will be done at once and is funded. That's a long wait but it will go more smoothly and quickly once it gets started.

WSJ is reporting the city is studying extending Akron Drive west so that it extends to Shorefair Drive at Reynolds Boulevard. They hope the extension will give better access to Whitaker Park.

I have, for the novelty. The fake stone texture in the precast barrier walls is in pretty poor taste imo. And then painting them the trendy gray was a mistake too. Whoever in the NCDOT that made that decision wasn't qualified.

But overall, it's nice!

No view of the WS skyline on that section.

WINSTON-SALEM – Drivers in northeastern Forsyth County will have a new way to get home for the holidays and beyond.
NCDOT:
N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to open the section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway between U.S. 158 and U.S. 311 Wednesday evening – six months ahead of schedule.

“This is a critical section of the Northern Beltway project, primarily because of how it will reduce congestion on N.C. 66 and improve the daily lives of people in the Walkertown area,” said NCDOT Division 9 Engineer Pat Ivey. “We couldn’t be more pleased to open this portion of the highway just in time for the holidays.”

Construction on the 2-mile stretch began in 2018 under a $33.2 million contract awarded to E.S. Wagner Company.

Like the 4-mile section that opened between U.S. 421/Salem Parkway and U.S. 158 in September, this new section will be signed as N.C. 74 until all six sections on the eastern side of the beltway project are complete. At that time, the eastern half of the beltway will be designated Interstate 74.

PER THE WSJ The State has a awarded a contract for construction of a 3 mile $261 million segment of the Northern Beltway between Salem Parkway and I-40 in the southwest section of the city. The section should be completed in November 2026, to be followed by landscape planting to be done by April 2027. After the awarding of this contract, there remains just one more section of the eastern side of the Northern Beltway. That last section that is located between I-40 and I-74 will be awarded in October of this year and could be completed at the same time as the Salem Pkwy/I-40 segment. Currently 7 miles of the Beltway is under construction from New Walkertown Road to US 52 North and is projected to be finished by the end of this year.

Good news - let’s not forget this will isolate what is now the segment from where the new junction of I 74 will be and present junction of I 74 with I 40. I hope but doubt NCDOT will apply for Interstate signage for this segment such as I 474 (see previous post).
