Hate to hear the news that another iconic Camel City business is calling it quits. 71 year old Cahill & Swain are in the final days of liquidating their inventory at their last remaining location at Northside S/C. Scott Sexton has a great column in today's WS Journal reflecting on the business. It had more to do with the advancing age of the owners more than anything else.

The article reflects on the growth of the firm and lists Downtown, Hanes Mall, Parkway Plz, Sherwood Plz, Healy Dr., Knollwood Street as among their locations over the years. They were a go to clothier for a litany of sports figures from both WSSU & WFU, whose signed photos lined the walls of the Northside store.

It appears the Downtown Bodega has closed (or moved?). Formally at 6th and Liberty.

That seemed like a tough spot for that type of operation,

ACE Hardware is closing its Cloverdale Plaza store.

The shelves are nearly bare. All remaining sales final with no return/exchange.

The Post Office there has no stamps and it is unclear as to where that branch will relocate - if it reopens at all.

God dammit!!
What a Terrible Shame! Walkable from a good chunk of Ardmore, a short drive from West End, that was a mall-busting choice for us. We spent money there whenever possible. It was a nice middle-sized hardware store with extensive stock, key machine… and the post office!
Damn, damn, damn, damn.
If the franchisee reads this, thank you for your efforts! It was a real asset to your neighbors and very much appreciated.

What happened? I thought that another franchisee had agreed to take over the business?

To buy a franchise with Ace Hardware, you'll need to have at least $250,000 in liquid capital and a minimum net worth of $400,000. Franchisees can expect to make a total investment of $650,000 - $1,000,000. They also offer financing as well as a discount for veterans (10%).

Running a business of any kind is not a piece of cake these days! Regardless of the franchise requirements, or what’s in your pocketbook.... Thank you for the most part to Amazon, the Internet, and consumers fickle buying trends.

Ardmore neighborhood once more considers life without a post office

Fuel Fitness has opened in the 30,000 square foot space next to Harris Teeter on Reynolda. It was previously occupied by some of BB&T’s back office operations. This 24/7 fitness operation has locations in Durham & Mooresville with more coming.

Wonder if they could carve out some space in the Harris Teeter? That store is huge.

From today’s digital WSJ - worth mentioning since it’s the first in the so-called triad.

Christian Brothers Automotive opens shop in W-S

The Christian Brothers Automotive full-service maintenance and repair franchise chain has opened a location in Winston-Salem at 5262 Fleetwood Circle. The local franchisees are Gene and Brenda Nardone. The shop is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The parent company, based in Houston, paid $350,000 in November 2021 to buy a vacant 0.75-acre lot in the Village at Robinhood shopping center, according to a Forsyth County Register of Deeds filing.
The Winston-Salem shop is its first Christian Brothers Automotive location in the Triad, as well as the ninth in North Carolina. There are more than 260 locations nationwide.

JPMorgan, the largest U.S. financial institution by total assets, has requested permission to open a Chase branch at the intersection of North Elm Street and Pisgah Church Road in Greensboro. The bank focused on Charlotte and the Triangle in its initial move into North Carolina.

Quote:
JPMorgan spokeswoman Allison Reed said the bank doesn’t have additional details on its Triad presence, including whether it has plans for a Winston-Salem branch.

The bank has a commercial banking office in Greensboro that serves mid- to large-sized businesses in the Triad.
