Notice the power lines, signage, original windows and fancy door to the 2nd floor hotel rooms . . . all gone.

The Little Pep diner was to the left. That entire building is gone.

I'm guessing this is circa 1962. It's so beautifully urban!

I found a great video from last year, but I don't know how to post it as a video. Just a link. It's a time lapse from Winston Tower, showing a storm moving over the Reynolds Building and ending with the crown lit. Beautiful, in my opinion and a must share with WSTB!

I love the library at UNCSA. They are hiring great architects and do appear to realize that architecture is art. Did you know there is a Film Production Design Building under construction at UNCSA that was designed by the famous Deborah Berke & Partners (award winning NYC architect for many ultra-luxury residential and hotel projects)? Her firm worked on 432 Park Avenue's interiors and has worked with 21C Museum Hotels. This city is actually gaining works from several noteworthy architects right now. I posted a few weeks back about Mark Zeff Design possibly working on the Reynolds Building's Hotel & Restaurants?

This is the UNCSA library as of Saturday 2nd August showing the south facing baffles. Sorry, Possum :alright: , I too love this building. Everything this day and age cannot be neoclassical with marble and limestone, as much as we love it. I only hope that some of the new construction in the IQ will be of this caliber, and built to the sidewalk, NOT surrounded by surface parking.

The construction crew's on site mock up.

You're certainly entitled to your brand of taste . . . and perhaps you'd care to volunteer your window cleaning services.

My previous comments reflect the reviews I've heard from members of the UNCSA campus community . . . and I have literally heard nothing short of disdain. Silly artists . . . what do they know, right?

Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of neo-classical architecture. I find its symmetry boxy and boring. I'm more of a Richardson Romanesque/Moorish Revival type of guy myself. That said, marble and limestone are still used in finer contemporary buildings. So are granite, slate and copper.

They may be more expensive than EIFS, poured cement and plastics in the short term, but I tend to value materials of quality and durability over the fast buck proxy preferred by lowest-bid architects who can usually count on their municipal client's ignorance of such details.

It's why developers can sell vinyl villas to culturally-deficient new south millionaires . . . what we used to call "carpetbagging".

I might phrase it a different way, though I agree with Possum...

It's the difference between a thick slab of wood on a pub tabletop and the 'urban chic' of 'distressed' manufactured materials -- give me exteriors that get better with age and I'll show you a building with staying power.

In this video, you can see the steep grades and turns along the expressway.

One of favorite buildings in Winston-Salem. It is so unusual, unexpected, and exemplary.
